Royal Serpents

Rick Simmons was born and raised in New Orleans, where music is just a natural part of your heritage, as is great food and grand spirits. Headquartered in Texas now, Royal Serpents is one man's journey and exploration in sound. The original object was to, finally, record the songs committed to memory for the past 25+ years and go from there. What happened next was unforeseen; a well-spring of creativity and composing. Currently, we're wrapping up the second Royal Serpents album, The Void, the fruit of many months of writing and recording.

Rick is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and composer, starting off on the trumpet in 4th grade and on to the drums by the 5th. By high school, Rick was playing drums in local punk and heavy metal bands, even playing live shows in legit clubs, at 15 years old, but, simultaneously, learning to play the piano at home, learning the hits of the day. In 1993, Rick started an original rock band, Rigid; a power-trio. This is where most of Rick's drumming and his unique songwriting skills were honed. Rigid conquered the NOLA heavy scene for nearly a decade, achieving local notoriety. They were so good, they got most of the opening slots for the popular bands of the day, such as, The Misfits, Rollins Band, Godsmack, The Jesus Lizard, Don Caballero, to name a few. During that time, Rick, learned to play guitar and bass and began to write his own music. Rick is also a master engraver.
